Working title: “wings” 2. Artistic blurb: An evening of Japanese Butoh dance performed by the United States based dance company, Shojorakudava. The company is in its first season and was founded by Staunton-born dancer Julia A. Vessey in coordination with Maro Akaji, the Tokyo-based Butoh master and founder of the world-renown dance company Dairakudakan. Butoh was started in Tokyo as an artistic reflection to the horrors of the two atomic bombs dropped in Japan the end of the second World War. “Wings”, a new piece by Ms. Vessey, is a utilization of the Butoh vocabulary learned through her studies under Maro Akaji and Dairakudakan. 3. Dairakudakan: Founded in 1972 by Maro Akaji, Dairakudakan has become the dominate company in the world of Butoh. Maro Akaji was the student of the inventor of the Butoh movement style, Tatsumi Hijikata. The company has performed hundreds of works in many countries in its 37 year existence. Hailed as the greatest Butoh company in the world, Dairakudakan works in the Temputenshiki style which literally means "being born into the world itself is a great talent." 4. Shojorakudava: Founded in 2008 by Julia A. Vessey and Maro Akaji, this US-based company is the blending of East and West aesthetics . Ms. Vessey received her Masters of Fine Arts from Arizona State University where she focused on the elusive dance form of Butoh. Butoh is difficult to see and study in the United States. Maro and Vessey’s goal for the company is to remedy this fact, and introduce Botoh to wider audience. Ms. Vessey will further her study of Butoh as Dairakudakan’s first American member for their 2009-2010 season in Tokyo. Upon her return to the United States she will return to Shojorakudava and continue to share the beauty of Butoh with the West. · Discussion o Grants - Discussion lead by Chuck + chuck: spent some time looking at grants, but it's very hard + drew gave chuck his aunt's e-mail address + jeff: start thinking in start of dream projects + ashley is coming into town (he will talk to her) + sarah ellis is moving back to the country, and she used to wrote grants o Creamery Clean-up + chuck: will follow up and sherri will handle this o Set Storage – Discussion led by Brooks + we're going to look into storage unit - jenni will call a friend · Announcements o Reminder: We do not have a maid-service, and trash should not just be left to pile up in the corner to rot and lure rats into our office. o PillowMan reading on Sunday June 28th at Greg’s House - This invitation is for board members only at this time.
